You know that awful feeling when you're driving down the road and the cop behind you flicks on those dreaded blue lights and signals you to pull off of the road. Unfortunately, I got that awful feeling last night. And this wasn't one of those times where I was flying down the highway, passed a cop, immediately slammed my brakes, and prayed that he would stay put. As I pulled over, I went down the checklist. Speeding? No. Ran a stop sign? No. Passed somebody on a double yellow line? No. I was stumped. SO why did I get pulled over you ask?! DING! DING! DING! And the survey says...driving without a headlight...ON MY BIKE!!!
So here's how it went. I was riding my bike home from campus after working the volleyball tournament all day. A cop pulls up beside me and tells me to pull into the grass ahead as he proceeds to pull his cop car up on the sidewalk and park beside me...oh and the blue lights are still going strong when he gets out. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! He informs me that in the State of North Carolina my bike, who I have affectionately named Barbara--She goes by Barbie on a spiffy day, anyways Barbara is considered a vehicle. I could get a DUI on Barbara. I could lose my license on Barbara. I could get a ticket for running a stop sign on Barbara. And I am assuming I could get a speeding ticket on Barbara. Anyways, Barbara and I made it home safe without the $161 ticket he said he could give me...I should have told him to just add it to the stack of parking tickets I already have on campus. So now I pass on this very exciting information to you. You have been warned....headlights people!
